Google will establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre of Excellence at the University of Zambia.
This comes after the American technology firm signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Technology and Science in June 2024.
According to Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Mutati, the AI Centre of Excellence will be the first of its kind in Southern Africa.
Mr. Mutati stated that Google will establish the Center of Excellence at the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN), which is housed at the University of Zambia.
Speaking after touring the newly built ZAMREN House in Lusaka, Mr. Mutati stated that the Center of Excellency will provide an opportunity for young innovators to solve the countryβs pressing challenges.
βYoung people will be coming here to create products and solutions based on their ideas that can help us alleviate certain problems,β Mr. Mutati stated.
He also praised ZAMREN for providing high-speed internet access to 150 institutions across the country.
According to Mr. Mutati, the internet benefits some of his Ministryβs skill training institutes.
He thanked ZAMREN for providing free internet access to students for research purposes.
ZAMREN Board Secretary Ronald Hatoongo also stated that the organization will continue to provide internet services to educational institutions in order to foster innovation.
Mr. Hatoongo expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Technology and Science for its ongoing support of ZAMREN.
