CHAN 2024: Zambia Captain Kelvin Kampamba Reveals Benni McCarthy’s Surprise Interest

Zambia captain Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba revealed that Benni McCarthy praised his creativity and even expressed interest in having him play for Harambee Stars.
Zambia captain Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba has opened up about the details of the conversation he had with Benni McCarthy after their final group stage match in the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).
Zambia lost 0-1 to Harambee Stars in a tightly contested match. They now exit the tournament, having finished fourth in Group A, with zero points.
Harambee Stars lead the group standings with 10 points, thanks to their opening match win against two-time CHAN champions DR Congo.
They then drew 1-1 against Angola before winning 1-0 in their match against Morocco. Harambee Stars rounded up their group stage campaign with a 1-0 win over Zambia.
Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba revealed that Benni McCarthy was proud of his dominant display in the match, noting that he showcased a different kind of creativity.
Kampamba noted that the former Manchester United attacking coach expressed interest in having him play for Harambee Stars, adding that the coach insisted that his kind of creativity is what Kenya needs to thrive.
“The coach likes me a lot, he has been following me, he was telling me that, ‘I would love you to be in my team because the way you are playing, you caused us a lot of problems,” Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba revealed.
“We were lacking creativity, and it needs someone like you.’ We just talked, and after that, I wished Kenya and the coach all the best. I told him that the team is good and they just need encouragement to continue impressing in this tournament.”
Speaking about their tough campaign in the CHAN 2024 tournament, Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba pointed out that there were several underlying factors.
Zambia started their campaign with a 0-2 loss against DR Congo. They then lost 2-1 in their match against Angola.
Going up against Morocco, Zambia struggled to make a mark yet again, as the two-time CHAN champions secured a 3-1 victory. They vowed to bounce back against Harambee Stars, but the match was no different after they lost 1-0.
“As the captain, we didn’t start well against DR Congo, and as you know, in every tournament, you need to start on a positive note. We lost 2-0, and maybe it’s because the guys were new. We tried to push against Angola, but they equalised and won,” he added.
“When the game was in the 70th minute in today’s match, the guys were tired. We are coming from the off-season, and the guys have not started our league games. I wish the association had helped us play friendly matches, and maybe that’s what affected us.”
Now, Zambia will have to go back to the drawing board and address their shortcomings as they eye their next assignment.

A match of moments- Mutapa describes Kitwe derby draw

By Precious Bwale
The Kitwe derby came alive and lived up to its billing with high intensity, endless action and two beautiful goals as the match ended in a 1-1 draw at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Ever since Oswald Mutapa took charge of Power Dynamos, he has yet to taste a derby victory and that streak continues after the draw.
Nkana struck first in the second half, taking the lead in the 67th minute thanks to a Lazarus Kambole goal.
They controlled most of the early phases of the game, showing a strong response after going 10 matches without a win.
Power Dynamos however kept pushing, grew stronger as the match went on, and found the equaliser in the 77th minute through Chifundo Mpansi’s sitter  bringing  life into the derby.
Nkana’s winless run now extends to 11 games, while Power Dynamos take a point to continue their unbeaten run.
Mutapa said it was a match played in moments with his team created more chances than Nkana.
“It’s a game that we played in moments. Yes, in terms of creation of chances maybe we created five, with them one or two half chances. But you know a Derby, emotions ,you could see from the players the way they reacted. This is just the game. But two points dropped. We could have done better with the chances we had. But this is football, we move on,” he said.
“In terms of performance, like I’ve said, we performed in moments. Of course in the second half energy levels went down. Nkana had a full week of preparation and we only had one day so it was always going to be difficult. But we were much better when we brought in others that were fresh and I feel we could have killed the game at that point,” he added.
Before the game, Coach Mutapa said he wanted the team to play like champions.
And he believes they showed character
“Yes, when we went down, we came through and that’s what you need in a team. You go down, show character, and still come back. We could have won it today,” Mutapa told the ZamFoot Crew.
Despite still not having a derby win under his belt so far during his time in charge of Aba Yellow the coach says he is not disappointed
“I am not disappointed actually. We got a point. We went one goal down and got the result which has pushed us somewhere. For me it’s about the results not personal glory, it’s the result that the team needs,” he said.
“Yeah, I think Nkana played very well. They played very well and hopefully they can continue playing like that. Nkana is a big team, and we want it in the Super League. But they need to ground results, not just in a Derby because others are waiting as well. It’s a difficult league, they just need to build on what they have gotten from this one.”
