Zambia will start their 2024 COSAFA Under-20 Women’s Championship with a lunchtime kickoff as they square off with Lesotho. This is the second edition of the U20 Women’s Championship tournament which kicks off today and will run up to November 24th. Coach Charles Haalubono has a blend of players from the U17 Women’s World Cup and U17 graduates from the last two years. In goal, Elite Ladies goalkeeper Esther Chitete Munsaka will fight off competition from Mwila Mufunte who was fantastic for the U17 during qualification and at the World Cup. In defence, Margaret Gondwe of Luyando Foundation Girls, Jessy Zulu, Theresa Musatila and Saliya Mwanza are expected to make up the back four. The versatile Eunice Bwalya is also available for selection. In midfield, Mapalo Maluba and Blessings Zangose Zulu will be looking to fight for a place in the starting XI with Bupe Banda, Mary Mukupa and Lubasi Pumulo all available for selection. Upfront, Mary Mbewe, Lydia Shamalima and Bwalya Namute Chileshe are the favourites to start. Haalubono could however start with ZISD forward Elizabeth Mwale with Edith Phiri, Ruth Muwowo, Gift Kalwizhi, Jacqueline Nambeye all available for selection. Five teams are taking part in this year’s edition namely: South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and Lesotho. The Format of the tournament will see the teams face off in a round-robin format with three points for a win and one for a draw. The team with the most points after their four games will be declared the winner.

Zambia midfielder Obino Chisala has been unveiled by Sudanese giants Al Merriekh. Ther 25 year old has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with the Sudanese giants on a free transfer following the end of his contract at Mozambican side CD Costa do Sol. Chisala spent the last eighteen months at Mozambique’s most decorated Club Costa Do Sol where he became a dependable player. The 22 year old joined the 10 time Mozambican Champions in July 2023 as a free agent after mutually separating with the bankers. Chisala spent three years at Sunset Stadium after joining the Bankers in September, 2020 from Happy Hearts. On the international scene, the midfielder has been impressive since he made his debut in March in a friendly match against Malawi last year. Chisala was the standout players in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers. Although he featured as a left back in most of those games, Chisala also played as attacking midfielder in some matches. He has since won 7 caps for Zambia
Fashion Sakala jnr was on target for Al-Fayha in their 1-1 against Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Arabian Pro League match on Saturday. With the match headed for a goalless draw, the 27 year old put Al Fayha ahead in injury time. But his goal was cancelled out two minutes later as Yami equalised for the big spending Al lttihad. This was Sakala’s fifth goal of season in 14 appearances. The out of favour Zambian is one of Al Fayha’s top players alongside former Manchester United and Roma defender Chris Smalling. Al Fayha are currently 17th on the log while Al Ittihad are level on 37 points with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Hilal. Former Liverpool and Brazil midfielder Fabinho and Karim Benzema are on the books of Al Ittihad.
