Muzala is a disappointment

THE National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has refuted social media claims by Zambian athlete Muzala Samukonga that he has not been paid his allowances.

Samukonga put up a statement on social media crying that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts promised all the athletes allowances and bonuses which they did not fulfill.

His claim was also recently backed by Copper Queens striker Racheal Kundananji who plays for US based Bay FC.

Kundananji posted on her Facebook page stating that their families would “not feed on the mere promises of Government.”

In response to social media claims, NSCZ general secretary Sambwa Musunsa stated that Government was disappointed with Samukonga’s conduct of accusing the Ministry of not paying his allowances when he had received over K190,000 in allowances for his international participation.

Musunsa said government attaches significance to the welfare of athletes and could not in any way abandon the sports men and women.

“To the contrary, Muzala’s daily allowances have been paid for major international events including the just ended Paris Olympic Games. To show you the breakdown, Muzala was paid the following.”

“K15,120 for his participation in the 2022 African Championships in Mauritius,

K12, 180 paid as per diem as part of his travel to the USA in 2022, K23,040 paid as daily allowance for the Commonwealth Games, K80,000 as winning bonus for the bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.”

“K30, 802 as daily allowance for the 2023 African Games held in Ghana, and

K53, 480 as daily allowance for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games,” revealed Musunsa.

He added that the sprinter was also paid K173, 850 for his medical bills when he was injured in 2023.

He however clarified that what Muzala has not been paid for, is the money for medals won at some competitions.

“We are aware that there are outstanding payments, and we are committed to ensure these are fully paid before the end of the year. To this end, the Ministry has engaged the Ministry of Finance to facilitate payments,” he disclosed.

He advised the Bronze medalist to be grateful stating that Government had even employed him in the Zambia National Service (ZNS) where he continues to get a monthly salary and other benefits.

“The Ministry also facilitated the donation of the house that Muzala occupies. After the Paris 2024 Olympics, the government engaged some well-wishers such as Chinese Association in Zambia and Kinglong who have pledged to contribute a sum of $25,000 to the athlete,” said Musunsa.

Africa: Salah's Egypt End Côte d'Ivoire's Afcon Title Defense, Join Nigeria in Semis

Head down, hands on heads, lost looks in the stands. The silence that followed the final whistle said it all. Côte d’Ivoire will not defend their crown. The dream of a back to back title ended in the quarter-finals.
The defending champions were knocked out of AFCON 2025, falling a 3-2 to Egypt on Saturday at the Grand Stade d’Agadir.
Egypt hit early, as Omar Marmoush opened the scoring in the fourth minute, before Rami Rabia doubled the lead in the 32nd minute, putting the Pharaohs firmly in control. Côte d’Ivoire responded before half-time through an own goal by Ahmed Fotouh in the 40th minute, reigniting belief among the Elephants.
After the break, Mohamed Salah restored Egypt two-goal advantage in the 52nd minute. Côte d’Ivoire refused to give in and pulled one back through Guela Doué in the 73rd minute, pushing Egypt deep in the closing stages.
However, Egypt experience and defensive discipline proved decisive as they held on to secure qualification. Salah and his teammates will now face Senegal in the semi-finals, setting up a blockbuster clash.
Earlier in the day, at the Grand Stade de Marrakech, Algeria were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria in the quarter-finals.
Completely outplayed by a dominant and well organised Super Eagles side, the Fennecs conceded goals from Victor Osimhen 26th minute and Akor Adams 47th minute. Nigeria controlled the match from start to finish, leaving Algeria with little room to respond.
The defeat ends Algeria campaign and means there will be no Maghreb derby in the semi-finals. Nigeria now book their place to face Morocco in what promises to be a high-level semi-final encounter.
